In my Backyard

Beauty Berry Bush

Ripening Beauty Berries

My Beauty Berry bush has ripe berries and I finally got to taste them. They had a distinctly piney aroma and slight piney taste that was a little medicinal as well. The texture was very sweet and grainy/gritty. There was little to no sweetness. But WOW, they are SO brilliantly purple, it was like eating something out of a Dr. Seuss book.

And now that I have tasted them, I’m very happy to leave them to the birds. Which is who I planted them for in the first place.

My goal is to create a mini backyard ecosystem that supports the needs of many different native creatures without requiring a lot of water, fertilizer, pesticides, or manual effort.

I’ll know it’s working when I see birds eating from the bush!
